Second Hand Smoke

 

Get Some Facts:

  • Secondhand smoke contains tar, which is made up of over 4,000 chemicals, including 43 known to cause cancer (CDC).

  • There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke, a cancer causing substance (CDC).

  • It is virtually impossible to avoid inhaling secondhand smoke in anything less than a 100% smokefree environment (ACS).

  • Each year in America, approximately 3,000 nonsmoking adults die of lung cancer as a result of breathing secondhand smoke (ACS).

  • The simple separation of smokers from nonsmokers within the same air space does not eliminate the hazards of secondhand smoke (CDC).

  • Between 200,000 and 1 million asthmatic children have their condition made worse by exposure to secondhand smoke. Exposure to secondhand smoke also causes thousands of nonasthmatic children to develop the condition each year(EPA).

How You Can Get Involved:

  • Join our coalition!  See the calendar for upcoming dates or call 1-866-3RURAL3.
  • If your a smoker, make a change.  Call the NY State Quitline at 1-866-NY-QUITS!  You may be eligible for FREE nicotine replacement therapy; such as the gum, lozenge or patch.
  • Write or e-mail your legislators:
